MLK Streets Project Documentary Screening and Reception

Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, 641 D Street NW, Washington, DC

Monday, January 9, 5:30pm

The Black Philanthropic Alliance (BPA), in partnership with Woolly Mammoth Theatre and Straight, No Chaser Films, presents a screening of The MLK Streets Project, a documentary film co-produced by the "A Nu View" Youth Crew.

The MLK Streets Project is a revealing documentary film that follows 8 Washington, DC high school students as they travel cross-country to observe and record, first-hand, the condition of America's MLK streets with a historic, geographic, economic and racial viewpoint.

Three years in the making, the film was created through the "A Nu View youth filmmaking program", an innovative arts-media education experience funded in part by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, and the Humanities Council of Washington, DC.

Celebrating the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday and the recent unveiling of the national monument dedicated to Dr. King, the film screening will include a cocktail reception and a community discussion regarding the current state of MLK streets in relation to Dr. King's "Dream."

MEMBER INTERVIEW

Meet Lowell Nerenberg, Executive Leadership Coach who coaches executives and teams to produce the results required to win.

SFP Editor: What is an executive leadership coach?

Lowell Nerenberg: In my opinion, a good executive leadership coach is someone with the background, experience, expertise, intuition, and interpersonal communication skills to understand a leader well enough to serve as an effective resource and catalyst for the leader to achieve his or her personal and organizational objectives. There is a lot more that goes into defining the coach-client relationship and the activities involved. Suffice it to say, for now -- confidentiality, safety, and trust are essential.

SFP Editor: Who can benefit from leadership coaching?

Lowell Nerenberg: Anyone in a leadership role, or who aspires to be a leader, can benefit from leadership coaching. However, for the coaching to be work best, the client must be open to learning and discovering things about themselves, no matter what they believe they already know. They must also have the courage to be candid and willing to share pertinent information about themselves, especially shortcomings and mistakes which bear on their ability to excel. With that said, it is incumbent on the coach to ensure the client that the coach can be trusted to deserve this open and intimate a relationship.

SFP Editor: What is your approach to leadership coaching?

Lowell Nerenberg: Sometimes executives think they want or need a coach or expert to come in and hand over a set of proven "best practices" which tell them what to do and when to do it. Now we all have access to the internet and unlimited good ideas of what we should do to be better at just about anything. But there are a number of shortcomings inherent in that approach. The most obvious one is, as we've all come to realize: we often know what to do - we just don't do it! When someone tells us what to do, we rarely "own" it. Remember all those wise things your parents told you? How often did you follow their advice?
